It’s hard to imagine any award being far from either the reach of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. But despite their consistency and supremacy on the pitch, they are currently lagging behind in the Golden Boot race.
Marca awards Golden Boot or Pichichi to the top scorer in the league every season. Lionel Messi received the previous edition of the prestigious award. However, the Argentine,4, is far from top yet, as he still lags behind the great Telmo Zarra who has six Pichichi awards.
Meanwhile, another goal-machine Cristiano Ronaldo has also won quite a few Pichichi awards in the famous Los Blancos shirt. The Portuguese has won three Pichichi awards till date, just one behind his rival Lionel Messi. Besides, the former Manchester United man faces the wrath of winning three more Pichichi awards before he hangs up his boots to level the record. The job though, won’t be simple with Messi also vying for the same in Barcelona’s colours.
Who else is in the leader boards?
Comparatively, Spanish legend Telmo Zarra won a record 6 Pichichi awards in Athletic Bilbao colors. His last award was in 1952-53 season with 24 goals, with Moreno (22) coming a close second. The following season however, Real Madrid star Alfredo di Stefano scored 27 goals in the white colour winning the title for Los Blancos. However, the Argentine’s most noteworthy achievement is when he won four Pichichi awards in a row from 1955-56 to 1958-59. Another Real Madrid player Hugo Sanchez is the only one who has levelled the feat till date.
Adding to the list, Quini and Puskas are two other players to have won four Pichichi awards besides Lionel Messi. His generation compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo is joined by Isidro Langara and Jose Eulogio Garate.
