Liverpool’s frailties at the back were at evidence once again as the Reds lost the foothold of a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 against Sevilla.
Liverpool were off to a flying start through Roberto Firmino in the second minute. The Brazilian found acres of space inside the d-box and finished well to draw first blood.
Philippe Coutinho found Wijnaldum from a corner and the Dutch midfielder flicked the ball to the path of Firmino for the first goal.
Sadio Mane doubled the lead through another set-piece in an exact replica of the first goal.It was Roberto Firmino who flicked Coutinho’s corner this time and the Senegalese made no mistake from the near-range.
Third goal was relatively easier for Firmino who scored a simple tap-in after Sergio Rico saved Sadio Mane’s shot.
However, Liverpool’s apparent control in the game was short-lived after an early second half goal broke their resoluteness. Ben Yedder scored from a header to put pressure back on a vulnerable Liverpool defence.
The away side offered Sevilla a lifeline once again with Moreno lunging on to tackle a Sevilla player inside the box. Ben Yedder had to retake his penalty following a foul play from Sevilla players in his first one but he got both of them right regardless which reduced Liverpool’s lead to one.
Finally, late Sevilla surge paid off with nervy defending once again coming to haunt the Reds. Claudio Pizarro was on right position at right time to punish the English side for their third goal.
Liverpool missed a crucial opportunity to seal the group leaders’ spot as a win would have mathematically sealed the group for the Kop.
The Merseyside club now face Chelsea in an enthralling encounter at Anfield. With a win, Liverpool can level points with the defending champions who have 25 points from 12 games so far.
Man of the match
Despite some awful Liverpool defending, Roberto Firmino was a star for the night. The unorthodox number nine will be frustrated with his defenders after a well-rounded brace wasn’t enough for his side to take all three points.
