Facundo Pellistri contract: United prioritise new deal for Uruguayan

Manchester United are reportedly looking to offer young winger Facundo Pellistri a new long-term deal as the Uruguayan looks to break into the first team at Old Trafford.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that United’s main priority now is to offer Pellistri a new contract as his current deal expires in 2025.

Romano also mentioned that contract talks have been underway ever since April and have continued throughout the summer. “Talks over a new long-term deal are set to advance soon,” he added.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Red Devils from Uruguayan club Penarol in October 2020, faced the challenges of adapting to a new country, culture, and league. However, his rapid development and impressive performances in the youth ranks earned him a promotion to the first team.

He made notable contributions during his loan spell at La Liga club Alaves from January 2021 to 2022, where he gained valuable experience in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Many fans have wanted to see Pellistri more involved in the first-team squad this season and he has been named on the bench in all of United’s league matches, having made two cameos off the bench.

Talks of a new contract are an indication of the club’s belief in the player as they look to nurture the young talent. United has a rich history of producing and developing world-class players through its renowned academy system at Carrington.

Erik ten Hag is having a hard time with the current wingers at the club after a spat with Jadon Sancho has reportedly put him out of favour with the Dutchman. United have also given Antony a leave of absence to deal with personal issues that have come to public light over the last week.

If Sancho and Antony are not returning to the first-team in the near future, Pellistri becomes the only player in United’s senior squad who prefers to play on the right wing.

As they are currently light in this area, the youngster is likely to get more of a chance in the first-team now to showcase what he can do at the biggest stage. Alternatively, ten Hag could also deploy Alejandro Garnacho or one of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount on the right-flank.

This could now be the most important moment of the Uruguayan’s career so far as he is set to get an opportunity to make his mark.

Pellistri is likely to be in the matchday squad for United’s next game in the league after the international break against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.
