Fred set to leave Manchester United

Reports in the last couple of days have suggested that Man United’s midfielder Fred is set to leave the club in the coming days.

United are not opposed to Fred moving on after the arrival of Mason Mount as they look to shift to a more attacking style of play in the upcoming season. They value the player at around £20 million.

There is apparent interest in the Brazilian from Turkish club Galatasaray, a few Saudi Pro League clubs and other Premier League clubs including Fulham. Hence, a move away from Old Trafford looks imminent.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Galatasaray approached United to sign the midfielder but their offer was subsequently rejected. United considered the opening proposal to be below expectations but negotiations have not broken down.

No Saudi club has yet officially approached United but they remain interested while Fulham have been monitoring Fred since the end of last season. The Cottagers’ boss Marco Silva is said to be “a fan” of the Brazilian.

Fred was brought to Europe by Ukranian club Shakhtar Donetsk, who signed him from Internacional, a club in his native Brazil. He was at Shakhtar for 5 years playing over 100 games for the club.

He was one of the hottest properties in Europe in 2018 when United managed to beat the likes of Man City to sign him for a fee of around £50 million. It did not quite work out as well as everyone had hoped though as Fred struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

He ended up becoming a regular in the United team, playing almost every game after 2020 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but many fans and pundits questioned his inclusion in the squad as he failed to perform consistently.

The Brazilian did eventually settle in at United and evolved into a squad player who was often called upon when the team required energy in midfield but was still inconsistent in his performances. He has played over 150 times for the Reds.

The midfielder has featured heavily for his national side though having made 32 appearances for Brazil as he became a key figure in their squad for the past few years.

Casemiro’s acquisition also really limited Fred’s game time at United and he is now looking to join another club where he can have more regular game time.
