Naby Keita, the captain of Guinea, has joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer from Liverpool, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.
Werder did not disclose the duration of the contract. However, the German newspaper Bild reported that he had signed a three-year deal through 2026.
Between 2016 and 2018, Keita played two seasons in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, assisting the team’s 2017 runner-up finish.
“The coach (Ole Werner) gave me a really good feeling and showed how I can help the team. Werder is a special club, and I know the Weserstadion from my time with RB Leipzig,” Keita said.
The midfielder made 129 appearances in five seasons while playing for Leipzig before moving to Liverpool for over 50 million pounds ($62.77 million) in 2018.

However, the midfielder suffered with injuries. He amassed five significant trophies with the Merseyside team.
The 28-year-old made just 13 appearances for Liverpool during the 2022–23 campaign, which saw the club finish fifth in the Premier League without taking home any silverware. Since his 2012 international debut, Keita has received more than 50 caps.
“Naby is a technically gifted and hard-running midfielder who will provide us more flexibility. He is dangerous in front of goal and can provide assists, too,” said Werner.” He will be an important figure in the center of the pitch for our squad.”
Werder Bremen finished 13th in the Bundesliga after promotion from the second tier under Werner.
